"Sweets For My Sweet,

Sugar for my honey"................not sure why but when I look at this picture, that old song keeps running through my mind.

I made sugar cookies and peanut butter for my great white hunter to take to work today. Now my great white hunter likes all the cookies that I bake but sugar cookies with loads of icing, no sprinkles are his very favorite. It has become a tradition for him to frost one cookie when I make them..........he puts a huge glob of icing on one cookie and eats it, declares they are the best ever. Over 40 years of the best ever cookies under our belts.

The recipe comes from my beloved cookie recipe book that I blogged about here. This one has gone to school, cub scouts, work and on and on. The peanut butter cookie recipe is here. It too has special meaning to our family.

No other plans for Valentine's Day here. We have gifts for the grands and might go out for a special dinner. We agreed to no cards and gifts, at this stage in our life, we don't need that. Not sure when that happened, but I guess after all these years, you just know.

In case, someone wants to make some "Sweets" for their "Sweet", I highly recommend these.

Ethel's Sugar Cookies

3/4 cup shortening (1/2 margarine)

1 cup sugar

2 eggs

1/2 teasippn lemon extract or 1 teaspoon vanilla (I always use lemon)

2 1/2 cups flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

Mix shortening, sugar, eggs and flavoring thourghly. Stir flour, baking powder and salt together, blend in. Chill at least 1 hour.

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Roll dough 1/8th inch thick on lightly floured board. Cut with 3 inch cookie cutter (or whatever size you want). Place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 6 to 8 minutes or until lightly browned. (when the edge looks light brown........remove).

Hope you all have a wonderful Valentine's Day with your loved ones and include some "Sweets for my sweet, sugar for my honey". If I have to have that song in my mind all day, might as well share it!

Hi Norma, I'm baaaack! Just like a bad penny! The cookies look delish, and would you believe I recognize the recipe name! Yup, that's the one I use also, ever since the 1960's. It's seen alot of wear and tear but I've taped it back together.
Great cookie tradition I think! Big hugs, Finn

Like Finn, we use that great recipe, too. Around our house we bake them at Christmas and use an old star shaped cookie cutter & sprinkle with sugar before baking. We always use Crisco shortening and slightly underbake for soft cookies. Yummie goodness. Happy V-day to you and your honey.

Thanks for sharing both recipes, Norma. I copied them down this evening and will give them a try.

I went and looked in my recipe box. My mom gave me an index card with the sugar cook recipe I grew up on (I'm 47) and the recipe I've always used for sugar cookies for my kid. I've never made another kind. Guess what? Ethel's Sugar Cookies! Small world!

Happy Valentin's Day to you, too. Your cookies look so good! My mom used to make rolled sugar cookies at Christmas time. She would frost them in red and green with little sprinkles. Our oldest son loved them. I will have to try your recipe. I have made rolled sugar cookies only once. That was for Valentine's Day years ago (when I was taking Wilton Cake Decorating classes). They were so good, too.

Boy, those cookies look wonderful! You are one wonderful wife to make rolled and iced cookies. My DH will never get things like that since the rolling pin and I don't get along at all!

When I saw the title, I knew the exact cookbook! I think we may have discussed this before -- it was the first cookbook I ever bought! I usually make the one next to it, Mary's sugar cookies, because I like using powdered sugar instead of granulated. But I have made them both many times over the years.
