What Gets You Through the Day?

Here in the desert, we are in our "down" part of the year. When it is snowing and cold in the rest of the county, we have our "up" part of the year. When folks have high heating bills, ours are low but right now the AC runs 24/7 and the electric meter just spins it's little heart out.

For the most part, most plants get stressed about now, the lawns get brown spots and our roses have brown tips on the leaves. Other plants have brown on them but most survive. However, there are big splashes of color here and there. I don't know how many of the colorful plants that thrive in the heat are native, they seem pretty tropical to me......but none the less, they keep me going in the summer.

This is one of my favorites, a pink hibiscus. We have tried to grow yellow and red ones but they seem to suffer from the cold more and we lose the plants. Not sure if it is location or just our lack of a green thumb. We do have two of these in the backyard that are thriving just now.

So, if I can look out the window when I do the dishes and see this, I might just survive the 111 degree heat that is forecast for the weekend. You have to take whatever it is that keeps you going and concentrate on that. What gets you through the day or the season?

I will take some pictures of a few more of the flowers that keep me from packing my bag and moving to a cooler local and post them soon.

Lovely flowers!!! We can't grow those in the Pacific Northwest - but I do love them. I sometimes miss the flowers we could grow in California, but there is nothing like the Fuchsias that we can grow here in our cool, sometimes rainy PNW. I start with tiny 50 cent starts - plant three or four in a pot - pinch their tips several times and grown huge overflowing baskets of them. Flowers, no matter the climate, as so wonderful. Thanks for sharing yours. Do you have Crepe Myrtle, or Bouganvilla? Ohh those warm weather plants!!!!

I am a recent Phoenician moved to the great Northwest. I love your post today on the heat and I remembered how I used to tell people the old Arizona saying: 'If you don't like or complain about the summers than you don't deserve our winters.'
Wish we had met when I was in Phoenix, we have lots in common.
You can see my blog at:

Norma, that flower is so pretty. I never have tried to grow them - but have admired them in other people's gardens.

Oh that heat of 111...do stay in under the A/C. Yes, the bill will be outrageous but stay cool. Our temps are supposed to be in the high 90's for the next 7 days. All outside work will be done early in the morning while still cool.

Take care...

Amelia

That's a beautiful hibiscus. I like the bright pink ones. I've seen some around this area, but haven't ever tried growing one. Please share more pics....as I love flowers.

Please keep that 111 degrees over there in AZ! It's hot enough here in MO.

That flower is gorgeous! I remember people having red hibiscus growing in their yards when I was a kid (in So Calif) but I don't see them as much now. I guess I will have to keep checking your blog for more beutiful pictures. :)

Norma,
I've been reading your blog for a little while now. Love what I'm reading. I've responding because of your statement that in the beginning you feel like you are writing with no one reading it. I've been bloging for several months now, and know how you were feeling. My only saving grace is that I have a statistic package that shows me numbers of people who are reading my blog, and I seem to have 3-5 who read regularly. So I'm keeping going, but don't get many comments. (I've made a new friend, Brenda who does post, and it is always a joy to hear from her.) Anyway, I love your hibiscus. My mom had a red one for several years. Until a year and a half ago, I lived in Phoenix (over 45 years!) We are now in Williams AZ, and love the climate up here. If you find a few minutes, stop by my blog - http://quilting-and-other-stuff.blogspot.com/
Thank you, I'll be stoping by again.
