My buddy Finn is doing a tutorial showing how to make a crochet rag rug. A round rug that lays FLAT! I grew up with these rugs and have tried several times to make one, only to have them curl up and then, I gave it up. So with Finn's encouragement and promise of help, I decided to give it another try. I dug out my crochet hooks, and of course, didn't have a size K. (I do have three H and two G size hooks though, now what was that all about I wonder?) So, after a trip to Walmart, I cut my strips, sewed some together and last night, tried again.

It was fun, Finn's instructions are great because they allow for adjustment along the way. Here is my "trial" rug. I am going to tear this out and start with a lighter color and assorted strips to get a more scrappy look but..........hey, it is laying flat. Now it is not as round as I think it should be but, by George, I think I might just be on my way to a rug of some sorts. Thanks dear Finn!

Isn't it wonderful when small feats make us so happy.

Congratulations on accomplishing this crochet hurdle.

I ought to check her tutorial out. I haven't done alot of crocheting but I understand the basic premise.

Can't wait to see what you make.

Hi Norma, it looks great!! And congraulations on it being sooooo FLAT! That is wonderful..you are right on schedule for when it begins to flatten out and behave itself.
It looks like you may have decided(?) to do the 'step up' chain at your join up?? That's how you can change colors and still have concentric circles. When you slip stitch through that first sc chain, you then do a Chain 2, and one more sc in the same join up stitch. Each time when you come around and join to that Chain 2, you chain up 2 more, put that extra sc in the same stitch and then go around. You can hand stitch a new color to begin exactly at the "chain up" part.
Only disadvantage I see with the "chain up" is that it's always slightly raised, never quite as flat as the continous round and round like a spiral.
I'll be adding that variation on my blog in a day or two..you just got the sneak peek!! Big hugs for a great job, Finn

Wow, I'm impressed! I'm also going to give it a good try when I get home. I just have to finish the prep work to get a really good start at it! I just hope mine turns out as good as yours!
